Crate Digging: The Flirts – “Jukebox (Don’t Put Another Dime)”

This came home with me on 45 on my last vinyl haul from Tres Gatos in Jamaica Plain. I first heard the song when raiding my dad’s 45 collection when I was in middle school or high school. I used to randomly choose records from his collection and find stuff I liked. This one stuck with me so when I came across it again, it had to come home with me.

This was the first time I went the step further to listen to other stuff of theirs. Nothing quite grabbed me like this song did. The songs of theirs that I’m digging more or less follow the same formula as “Jukebox,” such as “Telephone,” and “We Just Wanna Dance.” It’s hard to go wrong with 1-4-5.

I was saddened to learn they weren’t a real band. That is, it was really just one dude who wrote and played all the songs and had a rotating cast of characters to perform as the band. Bummer. This is something I wouldn’t have found out so easily in those pre-internet days. Their time had long past by the time I found that record so it’s unlikely I would have read about them. In the meantime, I’m glad to find out there’s a few more tunes to chew on than just the one.
