Hey Stranger

Hand Drawn Flier – 5/13/10

(No, I did not draw it. Let’s get that out of the way.) Poster and Flier making, I feel, has become somewhat of a lost art, primarily due to graphic design hacks like myself who just bang out something in photoshop or illustrator. Hey Stranger is fortunate enough to have some very talented friends, one of whom hand drew this great poster. I love the design so much that I’m insisting we use it for this show but reuse the main illustration, minus the show specific information, for a bigger show down the line. I’ve always wanted to do heavy stock screen printed posters for a special occasion.

Fliers and Flyers for April 2010

I’ve amassed a collection of fliers for the shows I’m playing this April. I’m so psyched for the way April is shaping up. Sleep is overrated anyways.

And here is a bonus totally NSFW flier for two of the ZASW10 dates.

*** Updated 3/30/10, added 4/13/10 flier
*** Updated 4/5/10, added alternative 4/10/10 flier

Upcoming Gigs: March & April 2010

I realize we’re already halfway into March but I have three gigs left this month and April is already packed to the brim. I didn’t take the time to link every venue and band because you’re smart people and know how to use the google. These are gigs playing bass for Hey Stranger or guitar for The Hard Times unless otherwise stated. I will be continuously adding information to this post, especially in regards to the Zombie Apocalypse Survival Weekend as I have it.

Duff Guide To Ska Reviews Hey Stranger

The great people over at Duff Guide To Ska had some great things to say about Hey Stranger‘s recent set at The Knitting Factory at the last Version City Party. Be sure to visit their site for a wide range of news from the ska world, not just in the NYC area.

Hey Stranger delivered a great set of their tight, high-energy ska-punk-pop tunes. Clearly, they were having a blast on stage and so was the audience, which seemed to be heavily stacked in their favor. Trombonist Ginger Hale (“heartthrob” according to their MySpace page), the most uninhibited and irrepressible member of the band, may have had the most fun of all (and his performance was strangely riveting–notice how in the videos I shot that I usually placed him in the center of the frame…).

They also snagged some great video clips! (more…)

Show Review in New York Waste – Fall 2009

Karol Khaos reviewed our 8/29/09 show at Fontana’s for the fall 2009 issue of the old school punk zine New York Waste.

Hey Stranger @ Fontana’s July 29, 2009

The night before my birthday I headed to Chinatown to see one of NYC’s premiere ska bands; Hey Stranger. I caught them at Trash Bar a month prior but was really looking forward to seeing them again sober. My friend Ayin and I drove down to Fontana’s and were impressed by the beauty of the place. The upstairs portion is huge with full bar, lounge and interesting photography and paintings prominently displayed. We sat below a huge black and white portrait of legendary Joe Strummer. Taking it all in, we ventured downstairs to the main stage area and was greeting warmly by Jacob Wake-Up! from Hey Stranger. We were introduced to a few other members of the band after saddling up to the bar for a couple of brews. Hey Stranger finally hit the stage and we were blown away by how many musicians there were! Ska bands always have a huge horn section. hey Stranger play a very hi-energy set with catchy upbeat tunes with an old-school flare. I was mesmerized by the horn section and wish I was a better dancer because it really got me going. Great vibe and and awesome crowd by Hey Stranger fans. They are definitely building a huge following around the NYC area. Please keep a lookout for these talented musicians. They give their music away for free so stop bypurevolume.com/heystrangernyc and be sure to check outheystrangernyc.com

I have to work on getting a scan of this as there’s no online version.
